Avatar was the blockbuster hot movie of 2009 and with that success comes the likelihood that it will have a similar impact on the Halloween market in 2010. For those of you who might have spent last year in a cave Avatar is the story of Jake Sully a wheelchair bound ex marine who is given the job of replacing his recently dead brother as the controller of one of the avatars. These avatars are a hybrid of human and Na’vi dna which makes them very strong and fast as well as being able to be controlled by the mind of a human.
The Na’vi are the inhabitants of the planet Pandora which corporations wnat to take control of because of its huge mineral wealth. The avatar program was meant to forge a relationship with the native Na’vi but the army presence sponsored by the corporations have other ideas and want to basically conquer the Na’vi by force.
The film basically concentrated on the relationship that develops between the avatar of Jake Sully and a Na’vi princess Neytiti which blossoms into love in the end but it seems doomed to disaster when the army launch an all out offensive on the Na’ve home, which they can not defend. Jake then manages to get back and start a resistance movement against his employers but the odds seem stacked against him.
I won’t spoil the end just in case you are one of the few who missed it either at the movies or when it was released on Blu Ray and DVD a few weeks back. Keep your eyes open this Halloween though as you are sure to see the Na’vi walking around here on earth, even if it is just Humans in Avatar Halloween costumes!
